Response to Leah,
I agree with you when you say that all the stories (that we have covered in class) have bad endings, and really lead to nothing. It makes it difficult to read through these stories because they are rather boring and i feel that while i am reading i am just looking for Joyce's method of revealing some sort of symbolism. I have to go back and re-read various paragraphs because i am too focused on searching for the meaning rather than the story itself.

For the second of class we were assigned to read "After the Race" and "The Two Gallants." Personally I thought that these two chapters we are little more challenging that the past stories we had read. It was a little harder for me to comprehend what was going on, and as usual, finding the underlying meaning of his writings. Once again, showing James Joyce’s more unique and advanced style of writing. In "After the Race" the symbolism that Joyce was trying to show his readers didn’t not pop out at me at first. It wasn’t until the class discussions that it came out. I just had to be shown for a different point of view than when I first read it. It is an occurring event that Joyce shows his symbolism through his characters in the story. The second story was the “Two Gallants”. This was about two men who made a maid steal for their self satisfaction. They both got some kind of excitement or fulfillment in having this made do so for them. The symbolism for this story was a little more revealing to me. I picked up on a few small hints during the dinner description as said in class.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Leah’s and Jordan responses to the stories. All the stories had rather short or bad endings. When I actually get what is going on, or finally get into the story it cuts off, which makes it rather hard for me to want to get into the next story assigned. His writing style is not my favorite either, and to top it all off, I am not a big fan of novels either. My reading comes from news, blogs, multi media sites or text messages, where the reading is a whole lot smoother and easier to comprehend. With also happens to be the style I like to write in as well. But, all in all, his stories and topics are all over the place for me.
